How we work

Four things you can check for yourself.

No adjectives. Just the parts of the process we're comfortable putting in writing.

One ingredient. Nothing else.

Read any pouch: it says almonds. Not almonds and preservatives. Not almonds and colour.

Named farmers, not brokers

Seven families. We buy the whole harvest — at the price they set — and add our margin after.

Compostable packaging

The box is uncoated paperboard. The ribbon is cotton. The pouch is home-compostable in 90 days.

Grown at 2,300 m

Cold nights, dry days. The reason the almonds are sweet and the walnuts are creamy.

From orchard to your door

Four steps. Nothing in between.

The distance between the crocus in Pampore and the jar on your table. No warehouse in the middle, no repacker, no aggregator.

  1. 01

    Grown

In orchards our seven partner families have tended for three generations. Elevations from 1,585 m to 2,400 m.

  2. 02

    Picked by hand

Never machine-shaken. Saffron flowers are lifted between finger and thumb before sunrise so the petals stay closed.

  3. 03

    Sorted the same evening

Cleaned and graded at a kitchen table the day it's picked. Saffron threads are separated one flower at a time.

  4. 04

    Packed after you order

We only fill the pouch or box once the order comes in. Dispatched from Srinagar within 48 hours.

October · The saffron window

Twenty-two days. Then it's gone.

The crocus opens for three weeks each October. Flowers are picked before sunrise, when the petals are still closed. By that evening, the three crimson threads inside each one have been separated by hand at a kitchen table and laid out to dry.

75,000 flowers make 450 grams of dried saffron. That's the whole arithmetic.

Build your own box

Six compartments. You decide.

Pick what goes in each section. We fill the box the day it ships, tie the ribbon in Srinagar, and put it in the post within 48 hours. If you'd like a note, we write it by hand on cotton card.

  • Six or eight sections
  • Cotton ribbon
  • Handwritten note on request
  • Shipping included in India

Sixty-two years in

We started with one walnut grove.

In 1962, our grandfather planted saplings in Kupwara during a winter too cold for anything else to grow. Those trees still stand. His son took over the orchard in 1998 and planted saffron in Pampore. In 2021 we opened the doors and started shipping what our families grow.

Grandfather plants the first walnut grove in Kupwara.

  2. 1998

Family expands to saffron cultivation in Pampore.

  3. 2021

Raw Kashmir is founded to bring the harvest to the world.
